Oregano

Origanum vulgare

The oregano on most supermarket shelves is not always Origanum vulgare. Marjoram, Mexican oregano and Greek oregano are three different plants sold under one name.

Benefits

Supports immune defense

taken at the first sign of a cold or a scratchy throat

Supports balanced gut microbial environment

volatile compounds in oregano help maintain a healthy balance of bacteria and microbes in the digestive tract

Provides potent cellular antioxidant support

rich in plant phenols that neutralize oxidative stress and help protect cells from environmental wear and tear

Why they work

Carvacrol and thymol synergy

potent phenolic compounds that interact with the outer cell membranes of undesirable microorganisms to disrupt their activity

Microbial balancing properties

helps deter opportunistic bacteria and yeast overgrowth while supporting natural intestinal balance

High phenolic concentration

natural plant phenols deliver strong free-radical scavenging activity throughout the body

How to use it for the specific effect

For immediate seasonal or immune support

take 2–3 drops of oil of oregano diluted in a carrier oil (like olive oil) or mixed into water/juice for 5–7 days; or use pre-diluted capsules as directed on the label

For gut balance routines

use oil of oregano capsules with meals for short cycles rather than continuous daily use

For daily cooking

use dried or fresh culinary oregano generously in meals, soups, and teas for general antioxidant and digestive support

Key active compounds

Carvacrol

the primary active phenol responsible for oregano’s strong antimicrobial and defensive properties

Thymol

a natural monoterpene phenol that works alongside carvacrol to support immune and microbial defense

Rosmarinic acid

a potent antioxidant polyphenol known for cellular protection and calming tissue response

Caution

Always dilute essential oil drops

pure oregano oil is extremely caustic and will burn the mouth, throat, or skin if taken undiluted.

Not for long-term daily use

avoid using concentrated oregano oil for more than 10–14 consecutive days to protect beneficial gut flora; avoid high doses during pregnancy.

How we chose it to buy online

We check every product so you don't have to. An oregano only makes our list if:

  • Carvacrol content published — the brand states how much carvacrol is in it, 70% or more, whether that is a standardized figure or a naturally occurring range
  • Wild-harvested source — a named wild Origanum species, high in carvacrol, from Mediterranean mountains
  • Pre-diluted in olive oil — liquid drops must be pre-blended in a carrier oil (such as extra virgin olive oil) for safety
  • Clean extraction methods — steam-distilled without harsh chemical solvents or synthetic preservatives

If no product meets these standards, we don't list one. No exceptions for affiliates.
